East Rockaway is a village in Hempstead at the end of the Rockaway Peninsula. Long before the village was the perfect place to call home it was a shipping and trade center for the south shore of Long Island. It has originally known as Near Rockaway and received its name from the Rockawanahaha Indian tribe which means the “place of our people”. In 1688, via a land grant, Joseph Haviland constructed a grist mill with an oven being purchases to make bread for the growing population. In 1869, the village name was changed to East Rockaway and became incorporated with a population of 969. The village is home to 2 elementary schools and 1 junior/high school in the East Rockaway School District. The community is close knit and offers a wide array of community events for the residents including parades and festivals. The village is home to a variety of businesses including print shops, gifts, hardware supplies, dance studio, catering hall, and many delightful restaurants. One of the most popular attractions which is also a historic landmark is the Haviland-Davison Grist Mill. Along with a few parks to enjoy the beauty that is found in the village including dog friendly Bay Park Dog Park.
